It was beginning of the punk rock intellectual movement in England. It was such the beginning that the name had not been formulated yet. A couple of us were in a house that looked right out onto the window of the house behind it. And Vivian Westwood said that she wanted to get a look at that good looking young man once again. He is always dressed so well.
As luck would have it the young man in question was Johnny Depp and luck was, sort of, smiling on Westwood that day. Depp made an appearance, nicely attired in the back window. the man was gracefully attired very elegant and at one particular moment he gracefullly bent down on the floor and started banging his head.
What are you supposed to do? we were sort of voyeurs but it could not be avoided. Depp was abusing himself. And Westwood said that she has go to his rescue and stop the man. And that is how they made acquaintance.
Somewhere along that time we started talking and I mentioned that in the neighborhood I wa born in there was an anti-fashion movement in which people just wore very simple, low key Levi 501s.jeans and quiet attire. Both Depp and Westwood agreed: this was not enough. They decided to make a really dramatic anti-fashion statement: they would be really ugly for the camera.
since both were stylists they knew how to make good haircuts and also knew about great mistakes. So they took their aresonal of mistakes :( eg. if you put hour hair this way it makes you look like a monster) and they marketed them to see if people would buy them.. It sold really well and thus started the famous association between Johnny Depp (of the alternative group called the Sex Pistols) and Vivian Westwood, the designer.
